IT WILL be quite a relief for senior citizens of Kanpur if the city police finally implement the directives issued by new SSP Alok Kumar Singh religiously.
The SSP has decided to provide protection to senior citizens under a novel plan that envisages ‘adoption’ of a childless senior citizen couple by each police station. Singh,on his first working day, was shocked by the murders of two senior citizens in Raniganj Kakadeo.
It may be recalled that a prominent ghee trader Khemchand and his wife Basant were found murdered in their house on Monday night.
According to Singh, “Every police stationwould now adopt one childless senior citizen couple. Details would be available at the police station. A constable would prepare a list of all the senior issueless couples living in the area falling under the jurisdiction of respective police stations.”
He added, “All minute details like list of relatives, tenants, servants, friends, milk vendor, vegetable vendor, newspaper vendor, family doctor, their illness, mobile number, landline number, would be collected. The police officers would be hold a meeting with such couples once every month, either at police station or at any other convenient place. The police would try to solve their problems like providing them proper care when required. For this, the police will take help from NGOs.”
Singh said, “Senior citizens require proper medical care too. An NGO would help in that. We are also going to keep the number of their family doctor so that we can help them in the case of emergency.”
The station officers of each police station has been directed to keep in touch with such couples regularly. The station officers would be enquiring about their well-being on phone or by a personal visit. All the information regarding senior citizens would be jotted down in a special register at every police station. The new SSP feels that such steps could prevent incidents like Khemchand murder.
Meanwhile, Kanpur residents have welcomed this approach. Noted social worker Dr DC Shukla said, “If the police really follow this project meticulously, it will be of great help.”
In the past, senior citizens have been killed by their servants, relatives and close associates.
The police have done nothing but warned citizens to keep the servants’ antecedents in mind before hiring them. This is a new, novel step.
