AS BANARAS Hindu University (BHU) started limping back to normal, academic activities remained paralysed at Sampurnanand Sanskrit University (SSU) here in Varanasi on Thursday.

Agitated over the suspension of eight students and banning their entry on the premises, the SSU students staged a massive demonstration on SSU here today. The students were demanding withdrawal of suspension of all the eight students.

It was alleged that some student leaders wanted to get their friends admitted in SSU against the set norms on Wednesday. The student leaders entered into a dispute with the concerned official who refused to fulfill their wishes. Chief proctor of SSU, Dr Kedarnath Tripathi, had suspended eight erring student leaders on Wednesday.

Agitated over this move of SSU administration, students leaders, including Ramkumar Tiwari, Jagjit Pandey, Awadhesh Tiwari and JP Tripathi, staged a dharna and demanded immediate withdrawal of suspension order of these students. The student leaders also paralysed the academic activities.

On the other hand, academic activities were restored in Banaras Hindu University today. Some students were seen attending classes wearing black badges in protest against Tuesday’s lathicharge over the students demanding restoration of students union.

“Everything was perfectly normal and the academic activities were conducted smoothly,” said BHU chief proctor Prof SK Singh.

However, some students forwarded a letter to the National Human Rights Commission on Wednesday informing the authorities about the Tuesday’s lathicharge and requesting them to intervene and investigate the entire episode.

“Yes, we have forwarded a letter to NHRC to get the entire inhuman act of BHU security personnel investigated,” said Awadhesh Dixit, who was spearheading the Satyagrah on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, some student leaders took out a march from Luxa area today against Tuesday’s lathicharge over students in BHU. The student leaders were raising slogans against BHU Vice-Chancellor allegedly for crushing the voice of students demanding restoration of students’ union in a democratic manner.

Leaders of various political parties have also criticised the BHU administration for Tuesday’s incident in BHU.
