The thieves broke into the temple, situated barely 200 metres from a police picket, late on Monday night and made off with the Shiv linga, a bronze snake weighing five kilograms and a copper base, police said.

The theft was detected by the temple priest and devotees this morning when they came to offer prayers.

Protesting against the theft, people staged a demonstration near the police picket and demanded action against policemen for dereliction of duty.

The protesters called off their stir after senior police officials assured them of speedy action in the matter.
