Suspected terrorists on Wednesday killed an army soldier and wounded another two in a gunbattle in the LoC, a Defense Ministry spokesman said.

The fighting began when an army patrol cordoned off the village of Kandi looking for suspected insurgents, said Lt Col SD Goswami.

The rebels hiding inthe villagefired on the soldiers, he said. The rebel casualties were not immediately known. Kandi is 160 kms (100 miles) northwest of Jammu.

Nearly a dozen rebel groups have been fighting for Kashmir's independence from India or its merger with Pakistan for the past 17 years. More than 68,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the conflict.
