A fierce gunbattle broke out between terrorists and security forces in Sopore town of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday following an abortive attempt by the ultras to storm a CRPF camp.
The terrorists, whose number could not be ascertained immediately, tried to storm the camp housed in a hotel building near Jamia Masjid in the town, 55 kms from Srinagar, but the alert guards foiled the attempt, a police spokesman said.
However, the terrorists managed to sneak into a nearby building and continued firing on the CRPF and police parties which encircled the area to neutralise the ultras, the spokesman said.
He said intense gunfight was going on but there was no immediate report of any casualty on either side. Reinforcements have been rushed to the area and further details are awaited, the spokesman said.
Official sources said several explosions were heard in the town prior to the firing and it is believed that terrorists hurled grenades while trying to barge into the camp.
The attack sparked panic among the people in the area where the main bus stand is also located, sources said adding, people, including shopkeepers, fled to avoid being caught in the crossfire.
No terrorist outfit has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
