Thane demolition drive: Chavan promises "sympathetic view"

Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan today promised to take a "sympathetic view" of the ongoing demolition drive in Thane in which over five lakh illegal structures are to be brought down.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan today promised to take a "sympathetic view" of the ongoing demolition drive in Thane in which over five lakh illegal structures are to be brought down.

"The number of people getting displaced is huge. Therefore, we have to take a sympathetic view and try to find a way out. Also the court's order should be obeyed," Chavan said.

Thane residents have opposed the drive started by the state on a Bombay High Court directive. The issue also figured in the state cabinet where some ministers suggested taking a "sympathetic view".
