Satish Ghotekar, assistant police inspector, said, “Bhillare had parked his autorickshaw near Khopat Naka in Thane (W) on October 30, and went to have some refreshments.
On his return he found his autorickshaw missing from the spot. He immediately filed a complaint of theft. We arrested Shaikh on November 3 and seized three autorickshaws from him. He had allegedly stolen them from Ulhasnagar, Mumbra, and the third one from Bhillare.”
Shaikh used duplicate keys or hotwired the rickshaws. The police suspect that he has stolen several more autorickshaws in a similar manner and resold them.
He is allegedly a habitual offender and had earlier been arrested in cases of theft. The police have booked him under Section 379 of the Indian Penal Code.
