The meditation mantra
Meditation can ease tension, be it related to work, family or life in general.
There are many methods of meditation but one of the better known ones is Transcendental Meditation (TM), which was made famous by Maharishi Maheshyogi. A US study of 2000 thousand people practicing TM over a period of five-years found that their visits to the doctor were reduced to half. Meditation helps in both physical and mental healing. It cures many disorders like ulcers, hypertension and insomnia to name a few. It also helps in the treatment of serious diseases like cancer and AIDS.

A journey of rediscovery
Modern day gurus and religious masters will tell you that meditation is about relating to the spirit of your existence. It is rediscovering your own inner being. It unties emotional, mental and physical knots, helping you to understand yourself better. And in the process, understand others as well.
How to meditate
One recommended method is to:
Lie or sit down with a relaxed frame of mind
Concentrate on a single point, it could be part of your own body. You may do it with eyes either closed or open
Play some relaxing background music, in case that helps you to concentrate better
The idea is not to empty your mind of all thoughts but to still it. Both modern psychology and old spiritual disciplines like yoga prescribe this form of meditation. However, it should never be practiced alone, without supervision. Expert guidance is necessary.
Another method by which you can meditate is by:
Keeping the mind totally relaxed while sitting or lying down comfortably
Closing your eyes but not blocking out thoughts. Being acutely aware of the flow of thoughts meandering through your mind. The mind may lose its conscious awareness, which is a perfectly natural phenomenon. In fact, your attention span may last only for a few seconds in the beginning. Don’t be alarmed. That should not worry you. Bring your mind gently to the focal point. With practise, your attention span will gradually increase.
The power booster
Smooth co-ordination between body, mind and spirit enriches your health. Meditation helps restore this co-ordination. Don't suppress negative feelings like anger, fear or greed. You simply have to be aware of these and accept them along with your other positive strengths. All this will augment your natural healing process of body and mind.
Interestingly, meditation opens a new world of knowledge and happiness. It will bring back the smile on your face and smooth the creases on your brow. Patience and practice are what you need to stay on this course.
