The story of Lotus unfolds in the Wuyi mountains in the south of China. Lotus is a pretty young woman. Soon after she marries, her husband dies.
As a new widow, Lotus faces various difficulties: her grief over her husband's death, a misunderstanding with her father-in-law, and their dispute over the division of the family property.
She bears all these problems on her own and nevertheless continues to support her family. Her beauty and her virtue win her the love of both the rich and powerful quarry manager and a bus driver, who is kind and honest.
Lotus must choose between them...
