Agnes Kharshiing Uncovered scam in illegal allotment of land at lower rates to bureaucrats.

In a city with 143,007 people, it's not easy to take on 62 bureaucrats. I may have been fortunate to be born in a family with political standing. I moved RTI after a CAG report this year on 'unauthorised allotment of land to Civil Service Officers' Housing Cooperative Society Limited'. I stumbled upon a huge scam at the New Shillong Township. They'd allotted land to themselves at R1/sq ft when the market rate was R350-400. The deal also violated the Land Transfer Act related to protecting tribal rights. In 2008, as part of the Civil Society Women's Organisation (CSWO), I found that the jailbreak of a prisoner was an inside job. I landed in the system's bad books. Perhaps it was a grudge they held when the police accepted a counter-FIR when I assisted a woman whose spurned lover was circulating her MMS. For a fortnight, I travelled 100 km/day to the police station. Those in the system even propped up a CSWO clone - maybe a new tactic in India - countering all we do for people's rights.
