CONGRESS PRESIDENT and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi who along with Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil visited the blast sites in Varanasi in the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday said, “The killers will not spared.”
“The State and Central governments need to work jointly so that the killers are identified and punished for the heinous crime against humanity,” Gandhi told reporters at the Sankat Mochan Temple in the wee hours of Wednesday here.
“Yeh rajneeti karnay ka samai nahi hai” (This is not the time to indulge in politics), Gandhi told Hindustan Times responding to a question whether blasts were the fallout of the grim law and order scenario in the State.
She avoided making any direct comment against the Mulayam Singh Yadav government on the issue. Gandhi was ferocious in her criticism against the perpetrators of the twin powerful blasts when she met mahant of the Sankat Mochan Temple Prof Veer Bhadra Mishra on the temple premises.
She urged the Mahant to ensure peace and tranquility in the town. “Shanti aur sadbawna banai rakhna,” she asked the mahant.
Mishra got emotional and tears rolled down his cheeks when Gandhi and Home Minister Shivraj Patil met him.
He asked Gandhi “Are we supposed to live in such a situation?” Replying to his question Gandhi said, “In the hour of grief and sorrow we have to maintain communal harmony.”
However, later talking to mediapersons, she said that both the State and Centre should work unitedly to ensure that the brain behind the blasts was held and punished.
Gandhi along with Shivraj Patil and Union Home Secretary VK Duggal later visited the injured at the Sir Sunder Lal Hospital in BHU.
She was accompanied with Congress in charge for UP Ashok Gehlot.
