Three persons were kidnapped by suspected insurgents of the outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) from Nutanbazar in South Tripura district, police said on Wednesday.
Police said a group of insurgents armed with sophisticated weapons crossed the Indo-Bangladesh border at Nutanbazar and stopped a lorry, which was carrying bricks and cement for constructing barbed wire fencing, near the dyke of Dumbur hydel project and kidnapped the driver and two workers yesterday.
When other workers raised an alarm, Border Security Force (BSF) troops chased the insurgents but they fled into Bangladesh, police said.
Vigil along the border has been stepped up, they said.
In a separate incident, a landmine planted at Swapnabari, a tribal hamlet in Dhalai district, exploded when the vehicle of an engineer of NF Railway was crossing the area. The engineer was supervising the laying of railway lines to connect Agartala with the rest of the country yesterday.
However, the engineer escaped unharmed and his vehicle was not damaged. Police launched a search operation in the area.
