Police late Saturday opened fire on a mob that went on a rampage in Rangiya town, about 70 km from Guwahati.

One person was killed on the spot and six were injured in the firing. Two of them died on Sunday.

Clashes broke out when a group of about 100 All Bodoland Minority Students Union supporters vandalised shops and vehicles at Rangiya after an altercation with local youths in the area.

Tension continued to build up in Rangiya on Sunday with hundreds of locals resorting to an impromptu demonstration to denounce the police firing.

"The situation is fast returning to normal although there is some tension in the area," Kamrup district police chief Parthasarathi Mahanta said.

Police and paramilitary troopers were deployed in the area.
