Demonstrators, protesting publication of caricatures of Prophet Mohammad in some European newspapers, fired some shots in the air and damaged a hotel as they marched towards the state assembly in Lucknow on Sunday.
Carrying placards, thousands of Muslims assembled at the historic Tilewali Masjid in the old city before staging a noisy demonstration in front of the Vidhan Sabha.
Some protesters fired shots in the air and burst crackers to register their protest.
The demonstrators shouted slogans against Denmark, Britain and the US. They also torched the effigy of President George Bush.
Glass doors of a five-star hotel were damaged and foreign flags fluttering there were set afire by some marchers.
