The miscreants entered his flat in Chandrika Nagar colony, under Sigra police station.
On entering the room, they attacked the official with a blunt object. When the incident took place, Verma was reading the morning newspaper, sitting in his drawing room.
An injured Verma, who slumped to the ground, was admitted to a hospital in Kabirchaura. He was out of danger.
The attackers bolted the door of the flat from outside and made off with the official’s mobile so that he might not inform police. The security guard of the building heard the screams of the officials and opened the room. He immediately informed others about the incident.
On receiving the information, the Trade Tax Department employees rushed to the spot and took him to the hospital.
Police registered a case but could not ascertain the motive for the attack. According to reports, Verma was transferred to Varanasi from Ghaziabad three months back.
He started living in a rented house at Chandrika colony and his family members were living in Ghaziabad.
