TRAFFIC ON all roads leading to district headquarters came to a grinding halt here on Thursday as a large number of people turned up to boost the morale of their leaders at the time of filing nomination papers for civic polls. Many candidates belonging to various political organisations filed their nomination papers for the posts of corporator and mayor.

Dozens of candidates belonging to several political parties and independent ones flouted the code of poll conduct issued by the Election Commission of India.
Several processions taken out by these candidates included over 50 four wheelers resulting into traffic jams in several localities like Teliyarganj, Katra, Kutchery, Bank Road, University Road, Manomohan Park and Shohbatiyabagh etc. A large number of people faced inconvenience and remained stranded for hours due traffic jam in Teliyarganj, Phaphamau and Katra in wake of long queues of motor vehicles in candidates' processions on Thursday morning.
Schoolchildren and office-goers faced a tough time due to massive processions. Vehicular traffic was blocked at three main entrance gates of district magistrate's office where nomination papers were filed. A few candidates entered the densely populated Katra area where their motorcade created chaos in the market for long hours. Dancing to the tune of drumbeats, supporters in several vehicles reached the collectorate.
On the other side, two main political parties -the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Samajwadi Party have fielded their candidates for the post of mayor. BJP candidate Vijay Mishra filed paper on Thursday.
He reached collectorate in a procession joined by hundreds of his supporters as well party's senior members.
Addressing the meeting at collectorate, Vijay Mishra accused the State Government of neglecting basic amenities and above utterly failed in providing security to people. Law and order was at its lowest ebb in the district, he alleged.
Samajwadi Party candidate for the post of mayor Vinod Chandra Dubey filed his papers in presence of senior party leaders here on Thursday afternoon. He addressed the gathering outside collectorate where he counted several works carried out by the Samajwadi Party-led State Government.
He claimed that many schemes like Kanya Vidya Dhan and Unemployment Allowance were successfully launched by the Chief Minister for weaker sections of the society in the State besides filling up of thousands posts with fresh appointments. He said several development schemes would be launched for the development of city after getting elected as mayor. It may be mentioned that Chaudhary Jitendra Singh filed his nomination for the post of mayor as Congress candidate.
