Train-tractor crash kills 9 near Kanpur

Nine people, including eight teenagers, travelling on a tractor-trolley were killed when the Lucknow-Kasganj passenger train rammed into it at an unmanned crossing near Shivrajpur, 50 km from here on Tuesday.

Nine persons, including eight teenagers, travelling on a tractor-trolley were killed when the Lucknow-Kasganj passenger train rammed into it at an unmanned crossing near Shivrajpur, 50 km from here on Tuesday. Fifteen were injured in the accident.

The accident took place around 9:25 a.m. at a railway crossing between Barrajpur and Shivrajpur stations. The impact of the collision was so severe that the trolley was smashed. An eyewitness told HT that the driver of the tractor-trolley was talking on his mobile phone when the accident took place.

Five critically injured persons were admitted to Ursala Horseman Hospital in Kanpur. Some others have been admitted to a medical centre in Shivrajpur town, said Rajendra Prasad, public relations officer of North Eastern Railways .

The driver of the tractor-trolley fled after the accident. The Railways have filed an FIR against the absconding driver. The Railways have refused to offer any compensation to the injured or the family of the deceased as the train driver was not responsible for the accident.
