The transfer of power to a caretaker government in Bangladesh has been delayed after the head of the proposed regime former chief justice KM Hasan took "ill".

An official in the president's house said they were ready for the handing over the power, but Hasan was ill.

Three persons were killed and more than 100 injured as rival political groups clashed across Bangladesh on Friday.

The violence erupted soon after outgoing Prime Minister Khaleda Zia finished a televised address to the nation.

The fresh bout of arson and violence sent worried influential civil society groups to convince bickering politicians to choose a non-confrontationist path as security was beefed up in Dhaka.

Meanwhile, the Daily Star newspaper reported that Hasan has indicated his reluctance to take oath as chief advisor to the caretaker government.

Quoting a source close to Hasan, it said the retired chief justice, who became the centre of controversy after the Awami League accused him of political bias, informed his decision to the cabinet secretary when he telephoned him on Friday night for the oath-taking.
