Mrinal Das, who belonged to the 9th Battalion of the paramilitary force, shot himself with his service rifle after killing Tanushree Karmakar, a trainee nurse, at her rented house at around 10.30pm on Monday night.

Karmakar, resident of South Tripura District, used to live with her mother Dipa Karmakar as a tenant in Sourav Dhar’s house.

Dhar said he had a heated argument with Das when he came to his house late at night. Later, Das, who was in his uniform, entered Karmakar’s house and within a few moments gunshots were heard.

Karmakar’s mother, who was in another room, and other residents didn’t come out of their homes out of fear.

IG (law and order) Anurag Dhyankar and superintendent of police Bijoy Nag rushed to the spot with a contingent of police after they were informed about the shootings.

When Dhyankar, along with a TSR team, entered the house they saw Das and Karmakar lying dead on the floor.

Dhar claimed Das and Karmakar were in a relationship for some time and were having some problem. But he failed to give any clue that may have led to the incident.

Police said they are investigating the matter.
