Police have booked the driver, Bachan Singh, for causing death by negligence, the same clause under which Alistair Pereira was first booked. But the high court later found Pereira guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, a related offence that carries a much stiffer penalty. An inebriated Pereira (21) had mowed down seven construction workers sleeping on the pavement in Bandra last year.

The three who died on Friday were among eight family members who had arrived in Mumbai the previous morning from Wardha in eastern Maharashtra, hoping to make money doing odd jobs during the Ganesh festival, which begins on Saturday.
