CITY POLICE have arrested two persons in connection with the murder of auto-rickshaw driver Shafiq, who had been found strangulated to death in Misrod almost two months back.
The accused, Arif, 28, a resident of Jehangirabad and Laxman, 35, resident of Bagh Mughalia, had an argument with Shafiq, 45, resident of Roshanpura, over fare following which they had allegedly murdered him, police said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on the night of March 7 when Arif and Laxman, after a drinking session had dinner at a hotel at Board Office and then hired the auto to go to Bagh Mughalia for a fare of Rs 80. However, reaching their destination they refused to give the amount and paid only Rs 50 leading to altercation with the auto-rickshaw driver Shafiq.
Both the accused are also auto-rickshaw drivers and the police were apprised of their suspicious routine after the murder. While Arif also did marble work, Laxman was basically associated with centering and worked as part-time auto-rickshaw driver.
The accused had strangled Shafiq with a wire and then threw the body in the deserted area before fleeing the spot, police said. Surprisingly, when the investigators looking for the duo on the basis of interrogations with local residents, reached their houses they found that both of them were already in jail.
In fact, just a couple of days after murder, they had surrendered before the police in connection with other cases of minor criminal nature committed long ago.
However, the police team reached the jail and quizzed the duo and they reportedly confessed their crime. Arif and Laxman have been arrested for the murder.
The accused told police that after the murder, Arif had taken the auto to Bhaironpur, three kilometers away from the scene of crime and abandoned it. Then he had taken lift from a truck, reached Habibganj station and slept on the platform. Later they decided to surrender in connection with past cases to escape police.
However, both were finally arrested. Both the accused have past criminal record in various police stations.
