Entirely based on Ganga river will be the gallery titled 'Evolution of culture in Ganga Valley' and the other one is 'Rock Art Gallery' which deals with the cave paintings and articles dealing with pre-historic period, almost 20,000 years ago, found during excavations.
Chairman of the Museum, Prof RK Verma, who has done extensive work in the field of Ganga river culture is quite enthused about the concept. "Being the first PhD in Archaeology from Allahabad University, I have already worked in detail on the concept of Ganga river culture since 1958-59 and this is quite an opportunity for me to utilise the knowledge here in the museum," said Prof Verma.
"The gallery on Ganga river culture will include the dioramas, photographs and articles dealing with the theme. Right from the Paleolithic period to the present era, the gallery will provide the significant knowledge of the human evolution, the impact of the river and how it supported the flourishing civilizations," said Prof Verma.
Another gallery is the 'Rock Art Gallery'. "It has been my dream to work on the concept. The gallery would deal with the photographs of the excavations, famous cave paintings and almost 80 photographs are ready to be placed in the gallery. Plaster cast of the significant articles will also be displayed," he added.
"The entire Ganga river culture gallery is being set up after much discussions with the experts and Prof JN Pal of Allahabad University is preparing the entire literature. By the end of February, the Rock Art Gallery would be completed," said Prof Verma.
According to Prof Pal, he has tried to put the entire details in a concised manner pertaining to the theme of human development, including late upper Paleolithic period, Mesolithic period, Neolithic period, Chacolithic period, Early Iron Age period and then the Maurya, Tunga and other dynasties have been included in his study. "I am also preparing the captions for the Ganga river culture gallery," he added.
Laying stress on the active participation of the museums, he said, now museums are not passive spectators and they should actively participate in the regeneration of social values. "This concept is the driving force behind our step towards reaching out to people and involve them in our activities. 'Gandhi Smriti Vahan' is being repaired and it will be put on display for the citizens soon. We are also planning to pay regular visits to schools and colleges in order to create interest in the students about our rich cultural heritage. However, much of our plans depend on the Central Government which is our funding agency," he said.
