The gunmen sprayed bullets from a AK-47 rifle at some persons at North AOC area, about a km away from Manipur police headquarters at 11.30 pm last night, killing two persons and injuring one man.

The victims were identified as Somdhar Tangkhul, a government official and his fried Gopin, the sources said.

The assailants escaped under the cover of darkness.

The police recovered 10 empty cases of AK-47 from the spot, the sources said.

An investigation has been ordered to find out how the gunmen entered the capital complex amid heavy central and state forces following the killing of IGP (Intelligence) Tunglut Thang Thuam by insurgents on Saturday, the sources said.

A red alert was sounded yesterday with security personnel instructed to intensify patrolling in their respective jurisdiction to detect movement of ultras.

Manipur government late last night reviewed the deteriorating law and order situation and increased activities of ultras at a cabinet Meeting presided over by chief minister O Ibobi Singh.
