Five policemen, including an Assistant-Sub Inspector, two CRPF personnel and a civilian were among the dead. Fifteen others, mostly securitymen, were injured in the gunbattle, Kashmir Inspector General of Police SM Sahai said.
The gunbattle began on Wednesday when militants attacked CRPF personnel in Dashnami Akhara building, in which the mace of Lord Shiva is kept, in the Lal Chowk area.
Sahai said the operation had been called off after a search in the area for any remaining ultra was completed.
