Indian expatriates in the UAE have welcomed the nomination of Pratibha Patil as the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) presidential candidate, saying the move will boost the country's image.

"It is always good for women to be in the forefront. It is good for the image of the country," said BR Shetty, a prominent businessman in the UAE. "Pratibha Patil has already proved to be a good leader and this move will help to empower women in India," he added.

Said Kiran Sangani, governing board member of the Indian Business Promotion Council: "India is already known for its respect to women. Pratibha Patil is an ideal candidate as she already has a proven record as a leader."

Biju Ninan, a marketing executive, hailed the decision saying Pratibha Patil's candidature was a sensible decision that would boost the country's image. "India can be proud if she is elected president," Ninan was quoted as saying by the Khaleej Times.
