Hours after visiting her comatose brother Sarabjit Singh in Lahore’s Jinnah Hospital, Dalbir Kaur made yet another emotional appeal to the Indian government to bring him back. Singh, she said, will never be safe in Pakistan.
A death row prisoner at Pakistan’s Kot Lakhpat jail, Singh had been grievously injured on Friday after an attack by other inmates. On Sunday afternoon, Dalbir Kaur had left for Pakistan along with Singh’s wife and two daughters.
In the evening, in an interview to a television channel in Lahore, she said, “I just want to say Sarabjit was never safe in Pakistan and will not be safe in the future either. I appeal to the Indian government to step up the measures and bring my brother back to India.”
Alleging the connivance of jail officials in the attack on Singh, she said, “I just want to ask that how weapons came to be inside the jail. My brother was beaten mercilessly and has not opened eyes ever since the attack. I cannot believe this can happen without the connivance of the jail officials.”
Singh’s lawyer Awais Sheikh, who accompanied Dalbir Kaur, said, “I was not allowed to
see Sarabjit. I agree with Dalbir’s demand that Sarabjit must be taken to India for treatment.”
Though Sheikh said Singh was being properly looked after, Dalbir Kaur insisted that he be shifted to India for treatment.
“I have asked the doctors and I have been told that my brother is very serious,” she added.
