"The information we have is that Malbari and four of his associates, nabbed in Ullal on the outskirts of Mangalore on
March 29, were conspiring to assassinate prominent political figures. There were many names on their hit list, Varun could be one," Director General and Inspector General of Police, Ajai Kumar Singh told PTI.

He said the five underworld criminals were working on directions given from abroad to assassinate or kidnap for ransom and execute prominent political leaders to disrupt the poll process.

The five have been remanded to judicial custody till April 13.
