Veteran CPI leader Sundaram passes away

Freedom fighter and veteran Communist leader MV Sundaram died in Chennai on Monday after a prolonged illness.

The 88-year old CPI leader had been ailing for the past three months and his end came at a hospital on the May Day, a party release said on Monday night.

A bachelor, Sundaram was a former treasurer of the CPI Tamil Nadu unit and Chairman of the New Century Book House.

Born in Ramanathapuram district in November, 1917, he took active part in the freedom struggle at a very early age and had been imprisoned several times.

Sundaram had spearheaded various movements such as the one against the zamindari system.

Joining the CPI in 1934, he had been the secretary of the combined Ramanathapuram district unit before becoming the treasurer of the state committee in 1971.

He established a school in Melapasalai village for the downtrodden children.
