The issuance of electors photo identity cards across the country is expected to be completed by the end of 2008.

The issuance of electors photo identity cards across the country is expected to be completed by the end of 2008, Chief Election Commissioner V Gopalaswami said on Sunday.

"We expect the work on the cards to be completed by 2008," Gopalaswami said, replying to questions from reporters at the airport in Chennai while on his way to Kumbakonam on a private visit.

When asked about AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa's allegation that the Election Commission had acted in favour of the ruling DMK in a recent assembly by-election, he said "an appropriate" reply had been given by state Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta.
