Tehsildar Vishwanath Chaudhary, police personnel and other staff visited the basti on Friday morning to warn the slum-dwellers that they would be forcibly removed from their habitat if they don’t voluntarily leave the place. Shanties in the colony are being evacuated for construction of proposed under-bridge in the area.

Residents of the colony are not opposed to their displacement. They are against resettlement at Sukhi Sevaniya, a deserted locality outside the City without any civic facilities.

Earlier, 400 families living in the vicinity of Bhopal railway station were resettled at Sukhi Sevaniya for construction of railway over-bridge but civic amenities promised to them have not been provided even now.

Residents of Nav Jeevan Colony had proposed they be resettled within five km of their present habitat so that their employment and education of their children do not get affected.

After the district administration did not heed to their request, they had moved a petition before the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), which restrained the administration to evacuate the houses till they are resettled.

Following snapping of power and water connection to their locality on Friday, they have again appealed to the SHRC to intervene in the matter and direct the district administration to provide them an alternative resettlement before going ahead with demolition of their shanties.
