What has the AAP really achieved? The ‘erring SHO’ whom the party succeeded in getting sent on leave by ‘prevailing upon’ the powers that be was, in fact, on leave due to illness on Tuesday.
The PCR in-charge, who was made to follow suit, had been off duty at the time of the gang-rape of a 51-year-old Danish tourist, the police insisted.
Inspector Vijay Pal, the station house officer (SHO) of Malviya Nagar who had attracted the ire of the AAP’s law minister Somnath Bharti recently, had applied for leave of his own volition on Monday, according to senior Delhi Police officials.
“His request was, simply, granted on Tuesday,” said a senior police officer. “This is the first time in history that a police official has been granted leave so close to Republic Day celebrations,” the officer added.
Meanwhile, police sources told HT that a ‘high priority’ meeting between home minister Sushilkumar Shinde, Delhi Police commissioner BS Bassi and ‘other government representatives’ was underway at north block till late on Tuesday evening.
Sources said the meeting was to figure out the modalities of expediting the enquiry against the inspectors in addition to brainstorming on ways to try and prevent a repeat of chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s dharna.
