With reference to Ramachandra Guha’s Not to question why (History Matters, December 27), lawyers should take up the cause of Binayak Sen just as Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das used to for freedom fighters in British courts. Let the nation know what Sen is guilty of and if he is more dangerous than Afzal Guru, Kishenji or Ajmal Kasab. Let justice prevail.

Ramachandra Guha claims that paranoid politicians and police officers are responsible for convicting Binayak Sen. But nationalists are needed to govern the country as human rights and pro-minority activists have only been championing a pro-Left agenda. The self-appointed advocates of democracy should not justify the wrongs perpetrated by the Maoists in the name of human rights.

Put the House in order
Pankaj Vohra’s assessment of public perception in Congress must pull up its socks (Between Us, December 27) is close to ground realities. The Congress might be sincere about punishing the corrupt and guilty, yet the public finds it difficult to believe this. The constant denial of the Opposition’s demand for a JPC sends out the message that it has something to hide.

The smooth running of Parliament is the responsibility of the government. If there is a logjam in the House, the government cannot absolve itself of this responsibility just by blaming the Opposition.
