White House seeks information on Thai coup

The White House said that it was aware of breaking news reports about the political situation in Thailand and was seeking additional information.

The White House said on Tuesday it was aware of breaking news reports about the political situation in Thailand and was seeking additional information.

"We've seen the reports, and we are seeking additional information," national security spokesman Frederick Jones told reporters as US President George W Bush prepared to address the United Nations General Assembly.

Thailand Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was quoted as saying on local television in Thailand that the country's army chief has been sacked and a state of emergency declared in Bangkok amid rumours of a coup against the government.
