At Van Vihar, the exercise began at 9 am and mostly all the field staff were engaged in the work. The census in Van Vihar would be slightly different from other national parks, as animals kept inside enclosures and those that could be seen in the open would not be counted since their numbers are already known to authorities.

Subsequently, panthers, tigers, lions, bears and some other animals would not be counted. Instead, staff would undertake census of deer, neelgai, cheetal, and other such animals.

Van Vihar authorities said the exact number of animals present in the park would be known through the exercise. The nodal agency for the census process is the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehra Dun.
