If you have a camera-enabled mobile and can send an MMS, so much the better. Your clip may even be treated as evidence.

In all cases, your identity will be concealed.

In an initiative picked up from their counterparts in Hyderabad and Bangalore, the Greater Noida police are trying to reduce crime in the area by actively involving the law abiding. The new scheme will be especially effective, they feel, in curbing minor crimes — traffic violations, eve-teasing, drunken misbehaviour in public — which many of us observe but rarely do anything about.

“We’ve appealed to residents to send us SMSes, MMS clips or photographs of unlawful activity in their areas,” said S.K. Verma, Superintendent of Police, Greater Noida.

Three MMS clips of traffic and parking violations were received on Saturday. The police expect response to improve as awareness of the scheme spreads.
