A 21-year-old woman from Manipur was found dead at her rented south Delhi accommodation on Wednesday afternoon with the police suspecting it to be a case of suicide.
According to the police, the incident was reported from Reingamphy's room located in H block at Malviya Nagar at 11:59 am after her landlord complained that she wasn't opening her door despite repeated attempts to make her do so.
"A PCR van was despatched to the spot and its members broke open the door to find the victim lying on the ground with her mobile phone in the palm of her hand," said an officer.
The victim hailed from Manipur's Ukhrul village and, according to the police, her male friend used to visit her often.
Her landlord told the police that the man in question had visited her on Tuesday as well but had returned after she did not open the door.
"The district crime team has examined the crime scene. There is no other point of entry on the ground floor of the two-roomed house. Initial post-mortem examination revealed injury marks on the victim's eyes and near her toes," said the officer, adding the nature of the wounds suggested that a portion of her body had been nibbled by rats.
Prima facie, the police claimed, the incident seemed to be a suicide with the victim having consumed 'some toxic or poisonous substance or food.'
"We are waiting for the final post-mortem report. Empty wrappers of some poisonous medicines have been found in a dustbin in the house. Proceedings under section 174 of Cr PC are underway," the officer added.
