Addressing people of the state after unfurling the national flag, she said her government was striving to uplift the poor and the weaker sections of the society.

“Economic freedom is the foundation of all types of freedom,” she said, elaborating on all the welfare measures taken by her government that aimed at empowering the downtrodden.

In particular, she mentioned the steps taken by the AIADMK government in education and women welfare. She also announced an increased monthly pension to freedom fighters and their families.

Jayalalitha also gave away the first APJ Abdul Kalam award to space scientists Valarmathi of Isro. The award was instituted this year in memory of former president late Kalam.
