Mayor Saroj Bala (Independent) arrived at the office and found her deputy, BJP's Pawan Bittu, seated there along with some other persons. Soon, tempers ran high as the mayor, who was with her supporters, found she had no place to sit.

A heated exchange then followed between the two sides over the seating, corporation sources said. Bala insisted that the senior deputy mayor vacate the chairs, but with Bittu refusing to relent, her supporters soon got into a fight with him.

The entire episode was recorded on camera by journalists.

When BJP councillor Sangeeta Singhal tried to intervene, others beat her up badly. In the melee, a BJP worker Nitin was also targeted by the agitated councillors. Singhal was initially taken to the civil hospital for treatment and later shifted to a private hospital.

The drama went on for more than 20 minutes and the BJP leaders alleged that the police failed to intervene.

Meanwhile, the BJP councillors protested and demanded registration of a criminal case against those behind the violence.

Till the filing of the report, the police were yet to register a case.
