On the opening day of the match on Wednesday, the hosts chose to bat first at Northampton County Ground and made a challenging 342 thanks to half-centuries by David Sales (96) and Ben Philips (75) and some late defiance by England spinner of Indian origin Monty Panesar (34).

Zaheer first accounted for Phillips, who was caught behind, and then castled lower order batsman David Wigley (0) in the next ball to apply brakes on the hosts.

However, the Indian seamer was otherwise luckless in the 21 overs he bowled yesterday as he conceded 81 runs despite bowling three maidens.
