Air Arabia and Emirates Airlines have applied to union civil aviation ministry for permission to launch international flights from Indore. At present, there is no international flight from Madhya Pradesh.
Talking to reporters during his visit to Indore on Monday, principal secretary (commerce and industry) Mohammed Suleman said, "Both the airlines have assured the state government that they will launch international flights from Indore as soon as they get permission from Government of India. Suleman was in Indore to review preparations for the forthcoming Global Investors' Summit.
Air Arabia is interested in launching direct flights between Indore and Sharjah. The return fare for Nagpur-Sharjah flight is about Rs 18,000, which is less than that of Mumbai-Sharjah. The airline is hopeful of launching similar low-cost flights from Indore.
"Emirates Airlines is interested in launching flights between Indore and Dubai. It wants to link the passenger flights to cargo services," Suleman said.
State urban administration and development minister Kailash Vijayvargiya had met the officials of Emirates Airlines during his recent visit to Dubai. After returning from Dubai, he had said the government is giving full support to the airline which is also keen to start an Indore-Dubai flight.
The Indore airport management has also taken steps to launch international flights. "Indore airport has the infrastructure to launch international flights and the airport management has sent a proposal for starting an excise and customs clearance counter to the director general of civil aviation (DGCA)," an airport official told HT.
However, Emirates Airlines is yet to conduct a survey of passenger traffic from Indore. After securing all regulatory approvals, it is likely to launch operations from Indore this December. The government has also provided statistics related to the export of medicines from the region to the foreign destinations following which Emirates showed interest to launch international flight from Indore.
The proposed flight will help in the export of flowers, fruits and other agriculture products to the Gulf countries which would benefit the farmers of the region.
