An 18-year-old girl was allegedly raped by two people, while her close friend was molested by the two on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday in Seoni district’s Gangpur village.
Shattered by the incident, the girl who survived the molestation, allegedly set herself afire and jumped into a well near her house on Tuesday morning. Her body was later retrieved from the well.
According to Barghat police sub-inspector and the investigating officer FS Uike, the accused stormed into the house of one of the two victims at around 10.30pm, where she was present with younger sister and friend.
One of them dragged the friend into a room and allegedly raped her, before returning to another room where, he and the other accused molested the elder sister.
Upset with the incident, the girl killed herself.
The accused, one of whom is a juvenile, have been arrested by the Barghat police.
The two hail from the adjoining Dharna Kalan village and have booked on rape and other charges, Uike said.
Tribal woman gang-raped in Khandwa
A tribal woman was allegedly gang-raped by six people at Khalwa on Monday.
The woman lodged a complaint with Khalwa police station that the incident was carried out around 7pm when she was returning to her village with her husband on a bike. She had asked her husband to stop the vehicle near Kalamkhurd village to answer nature’s call when the six people gangraped her taking turns.
Absconding rape accused arrested in Mandla
A man was arrested for allegedly raping a woman at Sarra Tola village in Mandla district on Wednesday.
Vishnu Maravi alias Totta, 55, was arrested for raping a 38-year-old woman in the village in August 2015.
Mandla police said the accused was absconding for over a year and the police had announced a reward of Rs 30,000 to provide information leading to his arrest.
