A 62-year-old man allegedly killed a married middle-aged woman he was in a relationship with, snatched the jewellery she had on her person and set the body on fire only to realise later that all the “gold ornaments” were actually cheap imitations.
Accused Shiv Narayan Singh was arrested Wednesday, over three weeks after he killed the woman on June 26 and dumped her partially burnt and semi-naked body in a pit near Tidi village on NH-8. Both the accused and the victim hailed from Udaipur. They had been in a relationship for the last four months.
SHO, Ghantagar police station, Rajendra Singh Jain said the partially burnt body of a middle-aged woman was recovered on June 28 after which an investigation was launched.
Meanwhile, a local jeweller lodged a complaint with the same police station stating that his wife has been missing since June 26, after she left home to attend a camp in Fateh Nagar area. Her mobile phone also came switched off.
While going through footage of CCTV cameras installed in various areas of the city, we found that the jeweller’s wife was last seen in a car at a toll plaza while heading towards Nathudwara. It was found that car belonged to Shiv Narayan Singh and he was driving the vehicle.
Police reached Singh’s house but he was found absconding. A manhunt was launched and Singh was arrested from a hideout in the city on Wednesday, the SHO said.
During initial interrogation, Singh revealed that he met the woman at a social event four months ago and remained in touch. The friendship soon turned into a relationship.
He revealed that on June 26, when the woman met him, she was wearing several gold ornaments, which he decided to steal. He offered her a poison laced soft drink and when she turned unconscious took her to an isolated place on NH-8 where he first snatched her ornaments and later set the body on fire after sprinkling petrol, the SHO added. It was only when he tried to sell the ornaments that he found they were all fake, the police official said.
Singh has been booked under relevant sections of IPC and the car he used to commit the crime has been recovered, the SHO said, adding further investigation is on.
