After good rains, sowing begins in Rajasthan; govt targets Kharif crops in 161 lakh hectare area

With good rains across Rajasthan, Kharif season sowing has begun in the state. Agriculture minister Prabhu Lal Saini said this year the government targets sowing of Kharif crops in 161.38 lakh hectare area.

“The (agriculture) department has made arrangements for sufficient quantity of fertilizers and seeds and there will be no dearth of inputs,” the minister said, adding that the government has arranged 5.58 lakh metric tonne of fertilizers and 7.50 lakh quintal of seeds.

Saini said 55% sowing has been completed against the set target in Rajasthan. In the coming days, sowing will be done in remaining areas with the rains. He said bajra will be sown on 44 lakh hectare area, maize on 9.5 lakh hectare, jowar on 6.30 lakh hectare, moong on 16 lakh hectare, moth on 12 lakh hectare, sesame on 4 lakh hectare, soybean on 11 lakh hectare, urad on 4 lakh hectare and guar will be sown on 35 lakh hectare area.

From June 1 to till date, Rajasthan has received 135.57mm rainfall against the normal rainfall of 121.26mm, which is 11.8% more. According to the district-wise rainfall, three districts are in abnormal category, 11 districts are in excess category, 13 districts are in normal category and six districts are in deficit category.

Last year, during the same period, 14 districts were in deficit category.

Out of 831 dams in the state, six are brimming with water, 232 are partially filled and 593 are still empty.

In the weather forecast for Sunday, the meteorological department has predicted that thunderstorm with light to moderate rains are likely to occur at most places in east Rajasthan and at isolated places in western parts. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in east Rajasthan, the department stated.
