Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator from Kota’s Ladpura, Bhawani Singh Rajawat on Saturday reiterated his demand for setting up of a new airport in the city while ridiculing the Centre’s plan of landing seaplanes in the Chambal River.
Rajawat, addressing a function here to commemorate the completion four years of the BJP-led Rajasthan government, however, showered praises on India’s first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru for constructing a series of dams and canals on the Chambal River in the region and neighbouring Madhya Pradesh that has helped farmers to irrigate their land.
Addressing the gathering in the presence of minister in-charge for Kota, Prabhulal Saini, the controversial legislator said: “Although the government’s four year tenure has been ‘commendable”, Kota’s demand of setting up a new airport has not yet been fulfilled.”
Criticizing Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari for his proposed plan of landing seaplanes in the Chambal River, Rajawat said: “Kota does not need seaplanes, but it needs a new airport.”
In March, Rajawat threatened not to allow any aircrafts of VIPs’, including the Prime Minister, to land at the existing Kota airport unless a proposal to set up a new airport in the city is taken up by the government.
The old Kota airport is ill-equipped and small and only a single flight operates between Kota and Jaipur every day, he said.
He, however, appreciated the Raje government for laying the foundation for the Parwan dam and Mukhyamantri Jal Swawlamban Yojana—the proposed river-interlinking project.
Countering Rajawat, Kota parliamentarian Om Birla said: “Rajawat can criticize the Centre’s decision but seaplane will become a reality when it will land at the Kishore Sagar Lake in Kota in 2018.”
On demand for setting up a new airport in Kota, Birla said, “If the state government sends a proposal for a land for the new airport to the Centre, then I will make effort to get it approved.
State agriculture minister Saini said the Rajasthan government has carried out a number of developmental projects in the state, including disposal of 1 crore revenue disputes under Nyay Apke Dwar, organizing the Global Rajasthan Agri Meet for farmers, free medical treatment for 17 lakh people under Mukhyamantri Swastha Beema Yojana among others.
