The incident took place in Jhalawar’s Chureliya village late on Thursday, said Om Prakash, sub assistant inspector of police at the Ghatoli police station.

The deceased Mohanlal Gurjar, 35, also mentally disturbed, was returning home after visiting a fair in the neighbourhood, when Mukesh Prajapati, 26, attacked him with a stone, Om Prakash said.

The accused repeatedly hit Mohanlal on the head with the stone and then dragged him to an agricultural field where he stuffed sand into his mouth and choked him to death, police said.

Later, the accused dragged the dead body trough the fair where villagers spotted him and managed retrieved the dead body from Prajapati, who fled the spot, police said.

The reason behind the murder is not clear but locals said that the deceased and accused were both mentally-challenged and belonged to the same village, said Om Prakash.

The dead body of the deceased has been handed over to his family members after an autopsy, he said, adding that police are searching for the accused.
