A newborn girl, wrapped in a cloth and still with her umbilical cord attached, was found in a critical condition outside the Bharatpur’s Janana (women’s) Hospital early on Saturday morning. The girl was rushed to the neonatal intensive care unit of the hospital and later taken to Jaipur’s JK Lone Hospital after her condition worsened.

The incident came to light around 5 am on Saturday after the Janana Hospital staff heard the baby crying outside the hospital’s control room.

Doctors said the child had been left in the open for “a substantial period” of time. “The child was wet as it has been raining intermittently through the night. Due to over exposure to rain the condition of the child deteriorated,” Surendra Singh, in-charge of the neonatal unit of the Janana Hospital said, adding that the umbilical cord was of the baby had not been cut and she was severely under weight.

The umbilical cord was tied with a string when the hospital staff found her. The child welfare committee is supervising the well-being of the baby and has named her Varsha, as she was found on a rainy day. The CWC will soon lodge a police case, committee chairman Saroj Lohiya said.
