A 15-year-old boy was killed in Murshidabad district of West Bengal for protesting against the sale of hooch in the area.
The accused was arrested on Tuesday evening hours after the victim succumbed to multiple stab wounds, police said.
The incident comes close on the heels of a 33-year-old volunteer of Delhi Commission for Women was beaten up and paraded naked in northwest Delhi’s Narela after the seizure of illegal liquor from a house in the area.
On Sunday night Rejaul Sheikh was stabbed repeatedly allegedly by Ashraful Sheikh, a local criminal who used to sell hooch. The victim succumbed to his injuries early on Tuesday morning.
“My son was an upright boy. He used to protest the sale of hooch in the area. Ashraful killed my son as he used to protest his illegal activities,” said Emarul Sheikh, the father of the victim.
The incident took place in Antadwip village under Shamserganj police station area of the district.
Local said a few hooch dens operate at the village. Often brawls break out in these country-made liquor shops.
On Sunday evening, Rejaul was gossiping with friends sitting in his uncle’s Bolero car when Ashraful, who held grudges against the former for objecting to his illegal activities, came to the spot and started kicking the vehicle.
When Rejaul protested, Ashraful, who was in an inebriated condition, picked up a fight with him. But locals intervened and forced Ashraful to leave the site.
“At night around 10pm when my son stepped out of his room to go to the toilet, Ashraful, who was hiding outside, pounced on him and started stabbing him indiscriminately,” said the father of the victim.
When the boy raised an alarm, the accused fled the spot leaving him in a pool of blood.
The teenager was rushed to local Anupnagar hospital in a critical state. After his condition deteriorated he was referred to Jangipur hospital. On Monday morning he was brought to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, where he died a day after.
