The handover of 17 month-old Indrasish Saha to his family marks the end of a seven-month legal wrangle and diplomatic efforts to resolve yet another cross-border family drama.
Indrasish will be brought home by his uncle Bhaskar Kundu, who has been granted custody by a US court. His parents, who had been accused of neglecting the boy, will stay in the US to fight the charges in court.
Indrasish had been in an US foster care since last September. US authorities had taken him away from parents Debasish and Pamela Saha alleging negligence.
In January, politicians and activists had petitioned the US government. Alleging injury and neglect in foster care, they called for immediate repatriation of the child to India. The petition alleged that though a cyst was detected in Indrasish’s brain, the foster care-givers limited his medical examinations to insurance coverage as per foster care norms. They also tried to conduct the operation without the approval of his parents, the family had alleged.
But for now, the family is ready to celebrate. “We are not certain which Bengali dish to cook for my grandson,” his grandfather said.
