“We got these documents last week from the Home ministry. We would preserve them and have plans to later display them as exhibits.

These will then be available for study by research scholars and historians,” Mushirul Hasan, director general, National Archives of India, told HT.

More importantly, Hasan said, the collection would help clarify many aspects clouding the events leading up to Netaji’s disappearance. The 15 trunks received from Home ministry reportedly contain all details related to the proceedings of the inquiry.

The trunks containing 2741 items include such personal belongings of Netaji as wristwatch, magnetic watch, spectacles, cigar pipe and umbrella.

In addition to statements of various witnesses and list of belongings of Gumnami Baba, the mystery monk held as many to be Netaji, the belongings further include letters, post cards, inland letters received from various persons attached to commissions instituted to probe Netaji’s disappearance.

The DNA report of Netaji, the Tokyo papers, Laxmi Sehgal papers, books written by different authors are also part of the collection that has been transferred to the National Archives.

The sequence of events surrounding the disappearance of Subhas Bose has been a subject of much conjecture, but no amount of research or probe by commissions could shed light on the mystery.
