The situation there was peaceful during the day, though the police were keeping a strict watch, IGP (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia said today.

Efforts were also made to clear the blocked Durgapur Expressway beside the small car factory by diverting some heavy-duty vehicles by the Maheswarpur road, while six and 12-wheelers were being diverted through the Old Delhi Road, Kanojia said.

Many trucks were still held up at Palsit in Burdwan district, he said.
The administration of Hooghly and Burdwan have requested local rice mill owners to provide food and water for stranded truck drivers and cleaners.

The IGP said that medicine consignments were transferred from stranded trucks to smaller vehicles for being ferried to their destinations.
